Tips For Keeping Your Septic System Running Smoothly All Year Round

Your septic system works hard behind the scenes to manage wastewater from your home—but without proper care, it can lead to costly repairs and nasty messes. The good news? With a little regular maintenance and some smart habits, you can keep your system running smoothly for years.

At John Kline Septic Services, we’ve seen it all—so we’re sharing our top do’s and don’ts to help you protect your investment and avoid septic system headaches.

The Do’s

  1. Do Pump Your Tank Regularly
One of the most important parts of septic maintenance is regular pumping. Most homes need pumping every 3 to 5 years, depending on tank size and household usage. To schedule your Lancaster, PA septic pumping, click here.
  2. Do Conserve Water
Too much water entering your septic system at once can overwhelm it. Spread out laundry loads, fix leaking faucets, and install water-efficient fixtures to help reduce the strain.
  3. Do Keep Accurate Records
Track your service history, including pump-outs and inspections. This info is helpful for technicians and can boost resale value if you ever sell your home.
  4. Do Use Septic-Safe Products
Look for household cleaners, toilet paper, and detergents labeled as “septic safe.” These products are less likely to disrupt the bacteria that break down waste in your tank.

The Don’ts

  1. Don’t Flush Anything But Toilet Paper
This one’s big. Never flush wipes (even “flushable” ones), paper towels, feminine hygiene products, diapers, or anything else besides toilet paper. These items don’t break down and can clog your system fast.
  2. Don’t Pour Grease or Chemicals Down the Drain
Fats, oils, and harsh chemicals can damage your tank and leach field. Always dispose of cooking grease and chemical cleaners properly—not down the drain.
  3. Don’t Drive or Park on the Drain Field
Heavy vehicles can compact the soil and crush the pipes in your drain field. Keep cars, trucks, and construction equipment away from this area.
  4. Don’t Plant Trees Too Close to the Tank or Drain Field
Tree roots can invade and damage your septic system. Stick to grass or shallow-rooted plants around your system, and keep trees a safe distance away.
  5. Don’t Ignore Warning Signs
Slow drains, foul smells, or soggy spots in your yard are signs something’s wrong. Don’t wait—
call a professional before it turns into a messy emergency.
